CSAT - Cold Spray Factoid #2
What does it take to 'stick' in cold spray? Here is our Day2 factoid leading up to Cold Spray Action Team conference next week!
The success of cold spray deposition hinges on exceeding a 'critical velocity' for the powder particles. This critical velocity isn't a fixed number; it varies significantly depending on the feedstock material, particle size, and the substrate material. For instance, softer metals like aluminum will generally have a lower critical velocity compared to harder materials like titanium or nickel superalloys. Passing this number is key to the success of cold spray! However, these relationships are complex, and to this day there is not a consensus on a predictive model for critical velocity.
